Flaxseed comes from the flax plant (also known as Linumusitatissimum), which grows to be about 2 feet tall. Its nutty-tasting seeds can be eaten on their own or crushed and cold-pressed to release flaxseed oil. The oil pressed from the seed (linseed oil) has been used for a variety of industrial purposes and the oil-free meal could be fed to livestock.
